Gun Violence Awareness Is More Important Than Ever

Gun violence has been steadily getting worse the past few years. In 2022, there were over 48,000 firearm-related deaths in the U.S., according to provisional mortality data. That’s about 132 people each day.

That’s why Gun Violence Awareness Month is so critical. Raising awareness of the enormity of the problem – and the ways we can prevent gun violence – can save lives.

Gun Violence IS Preventable

Gun violence has become more prevalent over the past few years, but it is important to know that gun violence is preventable, especially when you know the signs.

Signs of Potential Gun Violence

The signs someone might be at risk of being involved with gun violence can include:

  • Violent fantasies
  • Violent writing or drawings
  • Anger problems or difficulty controlling anger
  • Making threats
  • Isolation or being socially withdrawn
  • Suicidal ideation
  • Depression/expressing hopelessness
  • Homicidal ideation

When we recognize these signs, we are more capable of intervening and taking the appropriate steps to find help for individuals before an incident occurs. It is also important to note that although the state of one’s mental health is often the topic of discussion when an individual commits a crime using guns, most people with mental illnesses are not violent and are instead often the victims of gun violence.

Gun Safety Tips That Can Save Lives

During this month of June when we are raising awareness of gun violence, here are some key points to remember:

  • Learn to recognize any signs of potential gun violence and intervene if it is safe to do so
  • You can also make law enforcement aware of what you suspect
  • Use a safe or lockbox for handguns and rifles
  • Use gun trigger locks
  • Lock ammo boxes

Gun Violence and Youth

Furthermore, we must also be aware of the impact guns have on our youth. Guns are the leading cause of death amongst children and teens, and sometimes these incidents are unintentional. Guns that are not properly stored or locked in a lock box or with a gun lock can lead to suicide, accidental shootings of family members, and even school shootings. From 2015 to 2022, there were over 2,000 accidental shootings done by children ages 17 and younger.

Commit To Raising Awareness This Gun Violence Awareness Month

According to data from Sandy Hook Promise, 93% of school shooters planned the attack in advance. Recognizing the signs of potential gun violence and practicing gun safety can save lives. This June, share what you’ve learned about gun violence in America with your friends, family, colleagues and social media followers. Spreading awareness is the first step to combatting this threat to our country.

Are You Worried That Someone You Know Might Be at Risk for Gun Violence?
